March 11, 2005 marks “Nyepi Day” (Silent Day – Balinese
Hindu New Year) in Bali, which is marked by absolute quiet on the island.
It is a very important and strictly observed religious day and the period
commences from the early hours of March 11, and ends March 12. The Balinese
are forbidden to light fires or use electricity, drive or go for a walk
outside, listen to the radio or watch TV. On this day of reflection,
all traffic is banned from the streets. Hotel guests are required to
confine their activities to hotel grounds. These rules of silence must
be observed by Hindu’s and non-Hindu’s alike, therefore
there will be no transportation outside of the hotels. Garuda Indonesia
will not operate any Domestic or International flights in Bali starting
0600 hours 11 March, through to 0600 hours 12 March.
Gulf
Air
Gulf Air will cancel services to Colombo in Sri Lanka from 26 March
this year. Fareed Al Alawi, Gulf Air’s Vice President Network,
said, “Assistance will be provided to ensure seamless travel with
minimal disruption when the change is implemented at the end of March.
Representation will be retained in Colombo through the appointed General
Sales Agent (GSA), and the office in Morocco will remain open until
other measures are in place.” The withdrawal strategy is presently
being finalised and full details are being discussed with personnel
in both countries during the course of the next few days.
Qatar
Airways
Qatar Airways is doubling the number of flights between Doha and Bangkok
to twice daily.
The seven additional weekly flights are due to begin on 27 March 2005.
Qatar Airways will consequently operate morning and evening departures
from both Doha and Bangkok. Qatar Airways Flight QR610 from Doha International
Airport will leave daily at 0845, arriving at Bangkok International
Airport at 1945 local time the same day. Return flight QR611 leaves
Bangkok daily at 2045, arriving in Doha at 2345 the same day. Qatar
Airways Flight QR612 from Doha International will leave daily at 2025,
arriving at Bangkok International Airport at 0715 local time the following
day. Return flight QR613 leaves Bangkok daily at 0815, arriving in Doha
at 1125 the same day. The airline will continue to operate the modern
Airbus A330-200 in a two-class configuration on the Bangkok route. The
Business cabin has up to 24 seats that recline 160 degrees, while Economy
features a maximum of 259 seats.
SilkAir
SilkAir is to commence direct services between Singapore and Kuching,
Sarawak in East Malaysia from 28 March 2005. The scheduled services
to Kuching will be codeshared with Singapore Airlines (SQ) and will
carry both airlines' flight numbers and designator codes. The four weekly
direct services will be operated with SilkAir's Airbus A319 aircraft,
every Monday, Wednesday, Friday and with its Airbus A320 aircraft every
Saturday. Plans for the service to be also codeshared with Malaysian
Airlines (MH) are underway. Flight MI 378 will depart from Singapore
Changi Airport at 1840 hours and arrive at Kuching International Airport
at 2010 hours. The return flight MI 377 will depart from Kuching at
2120 hours and arrive at Singapore at 2245 hours on the same day.

Airlines
Beginning 1 March 2005, Singapore Airlines (SIA) together with Nickelodeon
will introduce exclusive SpongeBob SquarePants inflight toys onboard
all SIA flights (with the exception of the Singapore-Kuala Lumpur route).
Young travellers aged 12 and below will be treated to one of the seven
exclusively created SpongeBob SquarePants premiums to keep them busy
throughout the journey. What’s more, the much-anticipated Spongebob
Squarepants Movie should keep kids enthralled right through the flight
on SIA’s award-winning inflight system, KrisWorld.
Tiger
Airways
Tiger Airways is to launch a second flight between Singapore and Phuket
from end March 2005. The additional flight will operate initially twice
weekly, on Monday and Friday evenings, increasing to a daily second
flight for the peak summer season.
United
Airlines
From April 29, United Airlines flight 831 will depart Nagoya daily at
6:15 p.m. and arrive in Taipei at 8:15 p.m. the same day. Starting April
30, United Flight 830 will depart Taipei daily at 9:30 a.m. and arrive
in Nagoya at 1:20 p.m. the same day. The new Nagoya-Taipei service,
the first by a Star Alliance member connecting the two cities, offers
a one-stop, same-plane service between San Francisco and Taipei, via
Nagoya. A nonstop service from San Francisco to Nagoya, Japan, is scheduled
to begin on March 26.
Customers who book and fly a paid, qualifying roundtrip flight between
Nagoya and Taipei, through united.com by Dec. 31, 2005, can earn a booking
bonus of 1,000 bonus miles. Mileage Plus members traveling on this route
can earn double bonus miles on paid qualifying flights between April
29, 2005, and June 11, 2005.
United is advancing its scheduled increase in flights on its existing
daily service between Chicago and Hong Kong to May 6, 2005, from the
original scheduled date of June 7, 2005. The boost in service will add
three more flights each week between the two cities, for a total of
10 weekly flights. United also offers a daily service between San Francisco
and Hong Kong, as well as daily service between Hong Kong and Narita,
Singapore, and Ho Chi Minh City (formerly Saigon).
Nagoya
International Airport
With effect from 17 February 2005, Nagoya International will be relocated
from Komaki to Tokoname. Chubu Centrair International Airport is an
island airport off the coast of Tokoname, a suburb of Nagoya in Aichi
Prefecture. The airport sits on reclaimed land with a 1.5-kilometre
bridge linking the airport island to the mainland. The airport is approximately
46 kilometres from town and is accessible by road, rail and sea.
Nagurah
Rai International Airport
Nagurah Rai International Airport, Bali, Indonesia will be closed on
11 March, 2005 and there will be no arrivals or departures during that
day. Airlines will not be allowed to pick up or disembark domestic or
international passengers on that day. There will be no transfers, taxi
or other transportation permitted to operate until early morning on
March 12, 2005.
