Villa Feltrinelli

Winston Churchill painted it, D.H. Lawrence wrote about it, artists and statemen discovered this unexplored part of Italy centures ago: the beautiful village of Gargnano on Lake Garda. After four years of meticulous restoration, this neo-gothic home built by the Feltrinelli family in 1892 on the shores of Lago di Garda is now a twenty room ultra-luxury retreat for world travellers in search of romance of the past with modern conveniences of today, natural beauty, tranquility and discovery.

The villa and its grand park served as a summer escape for the prominent Feltrinelli family. Since then, the villa and its lakeside views have been admired by statesmen and artists alike. Mussolini resided several years at the villa during World War II.

In 1997 Bob Burns, legendary hotelier and founder of Regent International Hotels, bought the villa. A local man told Bob Burns, that somewhere beneath the surface of the lake lies Mussolini's gold. The original owner, Faustino Feltrinelli, an eccentric railway magnate of humble origins, refused to use marble in his summer house because it was 'ostentatious'. Burns has expunged all notions of modesty by subtly inserting 21st-century plumbing, air conditioning, sound and lighting into the grand old mansion, adding lavish antiques and wonderfully quirky furnishings that bring the villa to life. All 21 sumptuous bedrooms, some with frescoes, have lake, mountain or garden views and the bathrooms are a particular delight, with their enormous baths and walk-in showers. The villa, hidden from the landward side by dense greenery, is entirely open to Lake Garda, which is clean, clear and perfect for swimming. Visit the Villa Feltrinelli website.
